Internet Offending

Internet Offending

This is another in our series of public protection / child and young person child safeguarding modules which reinforces the agreed principle that child protection is everyone’s responsibility. This session will introduce the basics of child abuse photograph offences and confront the use of the phrase “child pornography” with the realities of what is involved. It will then move onto the behaviours of offenders on the internet and explore the concept of “grooming” as a behaviour and as a criminal offence. The session will then move onto research results exploring children’s behaviour on the internet before moving onto a case study of a young girl’s social media profile. All extremely practical based learning and essential in today’s technologically enabled society.

Course content:

By the end of this module the attending participants will be able, amongst other learning outcomes:

  • To be aware of the basics of child abuse photographs, and abuser behaviours on the internet.
  • To appreciate and recognise the use of social networks in the facilitation of real life abuse along with the concept and realities of internet grooming.
  • To identify and discuss the danger signals in internet behaviour of young people on the internet.
  • To complete an assessment of a young person’s social profile and identify the danger signals within it.

Module duration and delivery methodology

This module has been designed specifically to accommodate two different delivery strategies. Who should attend?

All practitioners who work with children and young people in whatever role including those within policing (and other rule-of-law agencies), education, health care, social care, youth offending teams, community workers, sports groups, after-school clubs and youth groups offering adventure, leisure or academic activities. It is also aimed at Parents and carers and those who perform fostering and respite-care roles.
